Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will boost the party's campaign in the state by addressing rallies in Navsari and Rajkot districts on December 1. This will be the first of her three visits though the dates and places of the other two have not been decided. At noon on December 1, Sonia will attend a public meeting at Jamanpada in Chikhli taluka of the Navsari district. She will reach Rajkot's Jasdan town at 2 pm. Constituencies in both these areas are going to polls in the first phase on December 11.
AICC General Secretary and in-charge of the party's Gujarat affairs Manish Tiwari said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to address public meetings in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot. His dates have also not been finalised yet. Tiwari said the Prime Minister was expected to meet intellectuals, academicians and people from other walks of life during his visit to these four cities.
Tiwari is not sure whether Rahul Gandhi will be in Gujarat to campaign but hoped that he would find some time. There is however no official confirmation of Rahul's visit. Party sources said that Rahul's assigned portfolio is Himachal Pradesh which is also going through elections.
Sonia Gandhi has spoken at four public meetings in the past six months--at Devgadh Baria, Mehsana, Porbandar and Anand.
EC on security overdrive
VADODARA: The Election Commission is rushing 580 companies of paramilitary forces to the state during the December Assembly elections. Helicopters will be seen both on December 11 and 16 to assist ground personnel. The security men have categorised themselves into “macro” and “micro” contingents, and members of each will be present in polling booths. Significantly, all forces summoned to oversee the Gujarat elections have had previous experience in covering elections in sensitive states like Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. It is learnt that each company will comprise 100-odd armed men. The state Government, on the other hand, will also put into action its own force, including officers from the SRP, the Homeguard and civil defence divisions.
